Western Archaeology – some current topics on social change

The idea of social change in archaeological theory and the driving forces behind change are constantly being re-evaluated and re-examined in western archaeology. This is both part of the internal theoretical development of the discipline, and also something where it is obvious that archaeological theory is part of modern society, and archaeology is always influenced by the general world view of the contemporary society. Hence, the models of explanations suggested, and indeed the notions of time and civilisations offered by archaeology often mirrors trends in society at large. This lecture will present some examples on how a previous romantic idea of the past now often is much more diversified, and new models are put forward that challenge the idea of a linear social development, and instead point at how crises and catastrophes can have had major impacts on the historic development. A case study of a severe climatic crisis and the social implications of this for Iron Age Scandinavia will serve as an example. It is suggested that quantitative methods can play an important role in reinterpreting large scale social change.

报告人简介：

Daniel L?wenborg, PhD, is presently working as a researcher and lecturer in archaeology and GIS at Uppsala University, and also as an associate professor at the University of Bergen, Norway. His undergraduate training is in Sweden and he has a Masters from Leicester University, England. He held a Marie Curie Fellowship at the University of Florence, Italy in 2005-2006, and have also been teaching GIS at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.。
